Announcement to Attract More Intergroup Reps

Please read this announcement from the Intergroup Outreach Committee at A.A. meetings you attend that do not have an Intergroup Representative (IGR). The announcement aims to increase IGR participation in San Francisco and Marin and help Intergroup better serve our Fellowship. To get involved with the Outreach Committee, contact [email protected] and join the next meeting on September 6 @ 6pm. It can be read during the time set aside for announcements:

“We are encouraging meetings that don’t have an Intergroup Rep (IGR) to consider appointing one. IGRs are the liaisons between A.A. groups and Intergroup.

“Of the 900+ meetings in San Francisco and Marin, only 42 have active IGRs. They vote on matters that affect Intergroup and A.A. at the local level, such as Central Office, money, literature, our website and more. IGRs also keep groups up to date with local information on service opportunities. IGRs ensure that local A.A. groups have a voice at Intergroup. If you have questions please come up to me after the meeting or check out the flier.”

Step by Step Workshop: Step Eight

AA in a Nutshell

The San Francisco Public Relations Committee is hosting a workshop on “Alcoholics Anonymous in a Nutshell” on September 3 @ 2:30pm. This event at the San Francisco Public Library (100 Larkin Street, San Francisco) includes such topics as, what is A.A., what’s a meeting like, and myths that may discourage people from going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Labor Day Speaker Meeting and Barbeque

Join the Fellowship at the Marin Alano Club on Labor Day for a speaker meeting, barbeque and live music. Speakers include Michael M. and Tracie M. on September 4 @ 12pm followed by live music and barbeque.

Reminder: National A.A. Technology Workshop 2023

The National A.A. Technology Workshop (NAATW) is hosting an immersive event on September 8-10 about the theme “Solving, Sharing, and Scaling Solutions”. Those interested in using technology in service to A.A. are encouraged to attend, to share their experience, gather ideas and bring learnings back to their groups. This is a hybrid event, so you can consider attending in-person in Virginia or participating virtually.

Farewell and Thank you Marcus W.

With both sadness and gratitude, we want to let you all know that our Special Worker Marcus W.’s last day is September 2. Over the last six years, Marcus has definitely been a presence at Central Office, and he will be missed! However, he has received an amazing opportunity to work with his former employer as their new Gala Manager. Please be sure to stop by Central Office or send him your gratitude at [email protected] before he goes off on his next adventure!

Marin Pop Up Bookstore

It’s almost time for the monthly pop up bookstore in Marin. Need a new book to read with a sponsee or pamphlets to offer at your meeting? Pre-purchase your A.A. literature and chips by Saturday, August 19 @ 2pm via the online bookstore for pick-up on Monday, August 21 at the Marin General Service meeting in the Jackson Cafe at Vivalon (930 Tamalpais Avenue, San Rafael). Select A.A. literature will also be available for purchase 6:45-9:30pm.

Step by Step Workshop: Step Eight

The 2023 Step by Step series continues with a Step Eight workshop, “Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all”. Bring your Big Book and join Patty H. at Mount Tamalpais United Methodist Church (410 Sycamore Ave., Mill Valley) for step guide activities and pizza on August 26 @ 1pm.

Dance Party This Saturday

Marin Fellowship Committee is hosting a Sober Summer Dance Party on August 12 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marin in San Rafael. The A.A. meeting starts at 7pm, followed by dancing from 8 to 10:30pm. This event is co-sponsored by several A.A. meetings in Marin. 3 Weeks Until ICYPAA

ICYPAA (also known as the International Conference of Young People in Alcoholics Anonymous) is coming to San Francisco September 1-4. The conference theme is “Watch Loneliness Vanish”. 12 Concepts Workshop Reminder

Join the 9am Online Daily Women’s Meeting of A.A. for a 12 Concepts: Women in Service workshop. This is an introduction to the 12 Concepts of A.A. and how to apply them at every level of service. This monthly series continues with “Concepts I – III” on August 19 @ 10:30am to 12pm online.

CNCA Summer Assembly

California Northern Coastal Area (CNCA) is hosting the 2023 Summer Assembly on August 12 at Redwood Acres Fairground (3750 Harris Street, Eureka). This hybrid event features a variety of workshops, including “Why Are We Here?” and “How Do We Keep Each Other Safe?”. Consider participating virtually or in-person and share your experience with your groups.

Consolidating the Marin and San Francisco services would allow Marin Teleservice Committee to better focus on serving the helpline rather than the administrative back-end. As Marin Teleservice examines its options, we are asking A.A. groups for input. If your group has input or ideas, please email marinteleservicechair@gmail.com before its next committee meeting on August 22.”

The Marin Pop Up Bookstore is celebrating one year of bringing literature to Marin via the pop up. Please continue to spread the word and support the pop-up. Literature and chips can be pre-ordered (and select literature will be available for sale) at the monthly Marin General Service meeting at Vivalon (930 Tamalpais, San Rafael) on Monday 8/21 from 6:45-9:15pm.

Need a service commitment? Anyone may join an Intergroup Service Committee, you do not need to be an IGR to get involved! Check out aasfmarin.org/committees for the complete list of Intergroup Committees, including what they do, when they meet and opportunities to get involved.

Become a Grateful Giver and support San Francisco and Marin Intergroup’s efforts to carry the A.A. message of hope and recovery to the still suffering alcoholic in Marin and San Francisco. And thank you to our current Grateful Givers!

Intergroup Service Committee Opportunities
Remember, anyone can join service committees. You do not need to be an Intergroup Rep to participate.

San Francisco Public Relations needs volunteers for the Re-entry Resource Fair on September 8 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. They are also working on a presentation at the main San Francisco Library on September 3 for the unhoused population. To get involved contact [email protected] and join the next committee meeting on August 14 @ 7pm.
The Communications Committee provides a wide-range of communications support to Intergroup. The committee has merged together with The Buzz and The Point for a trial-period. While remaining separate publications, the merged committee will help foster ideas and shared responsibilities across communications. Some of its recent projects include the Annual Report, the communications survey, Intergroup’s name change and logo development, and Intergroup’s statement of purpose. To get involved contact [email protected] and join the next committee meeting on August 14 @ 5:30pm.
Outreach Committee works to attract more participation from the Fellowship by spreading awareness of IGR participation and A.A. service opportunities at the Intergroup level. IGRs are encouraged to share a brief announcement at any meetings you attend that do not currently have an IGR. The announcement aims to increase IGR participation as we only have 42 active IGRs in San Francisco and Marin. To get involved at the committee level, contact [email protected] and join the next meeting on September 6 @ 6pm.
The Fellowship Committee serves both Marin and San Francisco by putting on events and promoting fellowship in our area. We are looking for committee members and a new chair to help organize fun sober activities and educational workshops on A.A. related issues. Some of our events include Founders’ Day, helping with Unity Day events and the Ugly Sweater Appreciation party (coming up later this year). To get involved, email [email protected].

Committee/Entity Liaison Reports

Marin Accessibilities Committee raises awareness of the possible barriers in accessing the A.A. message and participation in the A.A. program of recovery. It will be presenting at the District 06 San Francisco General Service meeting this month on access in A.A. and how it impacts local groups. Its next meeting is August 14 @ 7pm online and for more information accessibilities@maringeneralservice.org.
Marin Teleservice announced that the Marin Teleservice helpline is no longer in service. Everyone is encouraged to make the Marin Teleservice announcement at any meetings you attend. The committee is currently exploring its options, and is asking for input from A.A. groups before the next Marin Teleservice meeting on August 22 @ 7:30pm.
San Francisco General Service is encouraging GSRs to highlight sections of the Delegate’s Report from the most recent General Service Conference to A.A. meetings, such as an update on the plain language version of the Big Book.
San Francisco H&I is encouraging A.A. groups to get H&I Representatives if they don’t have one and continue to pass the pink can! SF H&I is currently serving 26 in-person meetings. The next SF H&I orientation is August 19 @ 11am and its business meeting is September 16 @ 10am.

The Tech Committee is assisting Central Office with testing the new VOIP system for San Francisco Teleservice. The committee is looking for committee members to better support San Francisco and Marin Intergroup and local A.A. meetings. San Francisco Mission Fellowship and S.F. H&I are hosting a Summer Barbecue and Potluck from 1 to 5pm on July 22 at Garfield Park (Treat & 26th streets). The A.A. meeting starts at 1:30pm, followed by the barbecue. You are encouraged to bring toppings, side dishes or desserts.

S.F. Phone Volunteers and Daily Coordinator Needed

S.F. Teleservice volunteers answer the A.A. hotline 24 hours a day for alcoholics in need. They help alcoholics find a meeting and carry out our primary purpose of one alcoholic helping another. San Francisco Teleservice Committee is looking for phone shift volunteers and a Thursday daily coordinator to help manage volunteer scheduling. If you have one year of sobriety and would like to be of service in San Francisco, reach out to [email protected].

12 Concepts Workshop Reminder

This Sunday is the first of six workshops on the 12 Concepts: Women in Service workshop hosted by 9am Online Daily Women’s Meeting of A.A. This is an introduction to the 12 Concepts of A.A. and how to apply them at every level of service. This monthly series begins with “Herstory of Service” on July 15 @ 10:30am to 12pm online.

Intergroup News

The following news was shared at San Francisco and Marin Intergroup’s July 12 meeting. Please take this back to your group and any other A.A. meetings you attend.

Intergroup appointed a new Treasurer, Hedy H. (Marin). We are so grateful to Hedy for stepping up to be of service and to our outgoing Treasurer: Jim M. You will be missed!

Intergroup did a lot of voting last night! After much discussion, Intergroup voted on the four-part proposal to change the structure of our monthly meetings while we remain online. Here’s the outcome:

Proposal: Quarterly, rather than monthly, Service Committee Liaison Reports
Outcome: Motion did not pass
- After hearing minority opinion, this proposal was voted on again.
- During the re-vote, the proposal failed to reach the 18 ‘yes’ votes needed for this motion to pass.
- At the end of the meeting, we incorrectly announced that the motion had passed with the re-vote. This correction will be added to the minutes and we will discuss it at the August Intergroup meeting.
Proposal: Break-out rooms at every monthly meeting
Outcome: Motion did not pass
Proposal: IGRs share a brief description of their home group each month
Outcome: Motion passed
Proposal: Raffle every monthly meeting
Outcome: Motion did not pass

The Sunshine Club brings meetings to individuals who cannot attend in-person meetings. It is looking for volunteers in Marin and San Francisco. Marin H&I Needs Your Support

Marin H&I is looking for volunteers to take A.A. meetings once a month to residents in facilities in either San Rafael or Kentfield. It’s a great way to be of service and carry the A.A. message similar to the early days of A.A. Consider getting involved and bring a friend/sponsee to the Marin H&I orientation on July 11 @ 6:15pm followed by the business meeting at 7:15pm at the Marin Alano Club, 1360 Lincoln Ave., San Rafael. If you can’t get involved right now, please spread the word that Marin H&I needs support. Another way to be of service with H&I is to be a sponsor for individuals in San Quentin. Central Office Holiday Closure

Central Office will be closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day. It will resume regular hours of operation, which are Tuesday-Friday 10-6pm and Saturdays 12-4pm.

The National A.A. Technology Workshop (NAATW) is hosting an immersive event about the theme “Solving, Sharing, and Scaling Solutions” in September. Those interested in using technology in service to A.A. are encouraged to attend in order to share their experience, gather ideas and bring learnings back to their groups. This is a hybrid event, so you can consider attending in-person in Virginia or participating virtually.

A.A. Info Table at S.F. Pride this Weekend

There is still time to help out at the A.A. information table at San Francisco Pride on June 24-25. Volunteers are needed for several hour shifts both days between 10am-6pm. July 4 Meetings and Barbecues

Looking for meetings and fellowship on July 4? You have options in Marin! Join the Fellowship at the Marin Alano Club on Independence Day for a speaker meeting, barbeque and live music. Speakers Andrew S. and Kate K. on July 4 @ 12pm followed by live music and barbeque.

For additional meetings on July 4, head to All Saints Church for the Novato Fellowship Alcathon & Potluck where you’ll find consecutive meetings starting @ 12pm, with a barbecue from 1-2pm. The last meeting is @ 7pm and will include chips to celebrate sobriety milestones. Bring a side dish or dessert to share!

Sunday Streets SF

San Francisco Public Relations Committee is looking for volunteers to help with Sunday Streets SF. Sunday Streets is a five-series event happening throughout San Francisco this summer. The next Sunday Streets is July 30 @ 11am-4 pm on Valencia Street. Volunteers are needed at the A.A. information table! Help carry the message to the still-suffering alcoholic who may not know about A.A. For more information, email [email protected].

Sobriety Through Service Workshop

Don’t forget the Sobriety Through Service workshop is June 28 online @ 4pm and 7pm. This event hosted by the PI/CPC Working Group of the East Bay Intergroup is an opportunity to learn how to get involved with Public Information and Cooperation with the Professional Community (PI/CPC) in the legal, law enforcement, healthcare and treatment settings.

Grateful Giver Design Contest Ending Soon

There is still time to submit a logo for the newly named Grateful Giver program on our website. The new logo will replace the current illustration of the dollar. Submit your proposed illustration to [email protected] before the contest ends on June 30. Intergroup will vote on the winner this summer.
