Happy Birthday Alcoholics Anonymous!

This week marks the 89th anniversary of A.A.’s founding, commemorating Dr. Bob’s last drink on June 10, 1935. A.A. members around the world have come together to celebrate and express their gratitude for Bill W. and Dr. Bob’s legacy. Help continue our Founders’ efforts to reach the still suffering alcoholic by contributing to the San Francisco and Marin Intergroup. There are several ways to contribute:

  • Send an Individual Contribution directly to San Francisco and Marin Intergroup. We accept annual contributions from A.A. members up to $5,000.
  • Sign up to be a Grateful Giver by contributing to Intergroup on a monthly basis. These recurring contributions are a consistent source of revenue Intergroup relies on.
  • If you are already a Grateful Giver, please consider upping your monthly contribution to Intergroup. Email [email protected] or call (415) 674-1820 to increase your pledge amount.

As Promised, Fun Trivia about Founders’ Day

Did you know that Founders’ Day was not always celebrated on June 10?

Prior to 1950, Founders’ Day was celebrated on Mother’s Day, the day Bill W. and Dr. Bob first met in Akron, OH. Why did the date change? The 1st International Conference of Alcoholics Anonymous was launched to celebrate A.A.’s 15th birthday in 1950. The National Headquarters (now the General Service Office) recognized that a large out-of-town gathering wouldn’t work for A.A. members who needed to spend time with their wives and mothers on Mother’s Day.

That’s why Founders’ Day was changed to June 10, so moms wouldn’t have to compete for our attention on Mother’s Day!

P.S. The next International Convention will take place July 3-6, 2025 at the Vancouver Convention Centre and BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada. Registration and hotel bookings will open this autumn. Click here for the latest Convention news from GSO!
